A Formalization of Floating-Point Numeric Base Conversion
نویسنده
چکیده
The process of convening arbitrary real numbers bito a floating poini format is formalized as a mapping of the reals into a specified subset of real numbers. The structure of this subset, the set of n significant digit base ß floating point numbers, is analyzed and properties of conversion mapp.ngs are determined. For a restricted conversion mapping of the n significant digit base ^numbers to the m significant digit base 6 numbers the one-to-one. onto, and order preserving properties of the mapping are summarized. Multiple conversions consisting of a Composition of individual conversion mappings are investigated and some results on the invariant points of such compound conversions are presented. The hardware and software implications of these results with regards to establishing goals and standards for floating point formats and conversion procedures are considered.

A High-Level Formalization of Floating-Point Numbers in PVS
We develop a formalization of floating-point numbers in PVS based on a well-known formalization in Coq. We first describe the definitions of all the needed notions, e.g., floating-point number, format, rounding modes, etc. Then, we present an application to polynomial evaluation for elementary function evaluation. The application already existed in Coq, but our formalization shows a clear impro...
متن کاملDecimal Floating-Point: Algorism for Computers
Origins of decimal arithmetic • Decimal (base 10) arithmetic has been used for thousands of years • Algorism (Indo-Arabic place value system) in use since 800 AD • Many early computers were decimal Decimal computation today • Pervasive in financial, commercial, and human-centric applications – often a legal requirement • Benchmarks do not reflect actual use • 55% of numeric data in databases ar...
متن کاملExtended BNF — A generic base standard
Generic base standards, that is, ones defining these fundamental concepts of information technology, offer a way of improving standardization in IT by enabling greater commonality. This paper looks briefly at the fundamental base standards of terminology and character sets. It then considers in more depth two other generic base concepts: syntactic metalanguages (for example, Backus Naur Form) a...
متن کاملLessons Learned from Converting the Artificial Stock Market to Interval Arithmetic
This paper describes work undertaken converting the Artificial Stock Market (LeBaron et al., 1999; Johnson, 2002) to using interval arithmetic instead of floating point arithmetic, the latter having been shown in an earlier article to be the cause of changed behaviour in the ASM (Polhill et al., in press). Results of both a naive (potentially automatable) conversion and one involving a more in-...
متن کاملObserver-Conditioned-Observable Design Pattern
The Observer-Conditioned-Observable (OCO) combines digitizing and transcoding of numeric change events. During the processing of numeric events, the transcoder converts the number from one range into another while preserving the mathematical integrity of the value. Numeric controllers that generate such events can be based in floating point numbers or integer numbers. For example, the JSpinners...
